Here, Wang Lung and the family had food sufficient enough to feed their stomach. He built the temporary house from the mats he had bought right after he arrived in the city.
Finally, Wang Lung rented a rickshaw and became a rickshaw-puller to earn some small amount of money to buy food for the whole family. Chapter The days passed and the family grew familiar with their routine: begging on the streets, pulling the rickshaw, and eating rice in the morning. Wang Lung learnt the ins and outs of the city from pulling his customers each day, but he did not have a sense of belonging to them all, like a rat in a rich man's house.
Although he and his family looked like everyone else, the people in Kiangsu were unlike those back home in Anhwei. Even what passed for a good meal of bread and garlic in his village was looked upon with disdain now by the southerners. One day, by the Confucian temple, Wang Lung heard a man speak out against the "hated foreigners" and he was terrified, thinking that he was whom they meant.
A fellow puller told him that this "creature with a dead animal wrapped around its neck" was a female from America. Wang Lung went as fast as he could to her requested destination and was rewarded handsomely, though chided for pulling so quickly. When he arrived home, O-lan told him that she, too, had come upon these peculiar strangers, who were too ignorant to know not to drop silver into her begging bowl.
Wang Lung felt reassured that indeed he belonged to his own kind, with black eyes and hair. Everywhere the eye turned, there were grain markets, duck shops, fish buckets, vegetable stands, and sweets and fruits in abundance. Meanwhile, the boys resorted to petty thievery for fuel and food.
One night, Wang Lung returned home to find a large piece of pork stewing in the cabbage soup. Wang Lung was suddenly angry to learn that his boastful youngest son had stolen it from the butcher. He threw the meat on the ground, but O-lan picked it up it, saying, "Meat is meat.
Afterwards, he took his son outside for a beating and desperately laments, after the ordeal that they must all return to the land. Buck II. Buck in , we are interested in the characters of the Wang Lung and O-lan. One of the significantly united personal traits of Wang Lung and O-lan is that they both love their family, especially children, who are the center of love in the family.
Wang Lung and O-lan, have three children and are living in a poverty-stricken state, and they both try to find a way to get their whole family fed even if it means they have to be physically exhausted with rickshaw pulling and begging in the street. They dare to sacrifice their comfort zone for the sake of the children. In addition to this, both of them make up their minds differently and impressively. Unlike Wang Lung, O-lan sacrifices her own fame to be a street beggar to beg for money, and she seems to be so clever in finding a way to make ends meet.
Wang Lung, on the other hand, chooses to be a rickshaw puller by earning only little extra amount of money from renting the rickshaw and pulling passengers through the unfamiliar environment in the Southern side of China. Different people possess different ideas in making money. Lastly but importantly, where there is a will, there is a way. When a problem arises, there will always be a way to the solution, but it only requires individuals to make a wise decision.
For example, Wang Lung determines to leave his own village, while many other villagers remain behind. With this decision, he is able to lead the whole family to, if not a better lifestyle, at least get fed to survive instead of eating human flesh like his uncle, who stays in the village. One cannot live to wait for a change to happen, and problems cannot solve themselves but a wise decision with a strong determination can.
Likewise, O-lan, who never fails to surprise us, makes a wise decision to steadfastly refuse to sell the farmlands but household furniture to get some money to travel to the south. The story has provided us many good lessons in our lives. When we were reading it, we were absurd in it so much.
We would recommend it to our friends and those who would like to be good parents in order that they can perform their roles better in the family. Internet Archive's 25th Anniversary Logo.
