So what to do? The author lays out a Gremlin-Taming Method, which he purports to be a simple and enjoyable process, but which also takes practice and persistence. You must pay attention, heightening your awareness to the existence of your gremlin.
Can you describe her? Name her? Draw a picture of her? Simply noticing your gremlin will help you to observe not just what is going on around you, but your own thoughts, emotions, and memories in the moment they are occurring. It takes a little practice to "just notice". I find it calming and interesting. This book could change your life for the better. It could if you allow it, understand it, and practice the concepts.
Those concepts don't primarily involve other people, although your interactions with others may change due to your own small changes and your happier self. This book is for the essential you. It's a nebulous and fluid blueprint for making choices and living. I suggest if you acquire this book you keep it and read bits of it often. Jul 30, Greta rated it it was ok Shelves: general-non-fiction. I don't have a problem imagining my inner critic or my ego or whatever other name you want to call it, but somehow they don't look anything like the drawings in this book which I found a bit jarring.
If you are new to the idea of getting out of your own way, this book might provide some useful information, but if you're looking for something deep and comprehensive, then I think you'd be better off looking elsewhere.
Jul 01, Samantha rated it it was ok. The ideas in this book are good, but wading through all the goofy analogies and stories just made this book trite. I can't believe this was written for a thinking adult. I had a discussion leader boil down the concepts in this book in about 1 page, and that was plenty. I think the author just drug out the ideas to a point that the concepts lost their impact.
Jan 30, Kasey is currently reading it. On Brooke's website "warnercoaching. I thought I should read because I tend to have quite a critic in my head! This book helps us easily make contact with some of the parts of ourselves and have fun doing it. No shoulds. No guilt.

Oct 12, LexIconDevil rated it really liked it Shelves: storage. I haven't read much in the way of "self-help" books since my teenage years. There were pretty big in the s. But this specific book was suggested to me, as a way to help circumvent some of the self-sabotaging traits that I have.
Let me focus on the negative things I have to say about the book first. It can get rather hippie-dippy, and it occasionally seemed heavy on the platitudes. This was an updated version of the original book, and the pieces original and updated sometimes didn't seem I haven't read much in the way of "self-help" books since my teenage years. This was an updated version of the original book, and the pieces original and updated sometimes didn't seem to mesh together well - imagine a 70s counselor suddenly mentioning his website, and you sort of get the idea.
Also, I found the pictures spectacularly unattractive to look at, and there's a lot of them. I know. They're gremlins. But even the humans didn't look very good. All that said, I still got a lot out of this book.
I like how things were laid out and explained, and I especially liked the very-low-pressure "sales technique". I was expecting a "to change your life, you must do the following" sort of book. But instead, the basic tone is "consider looking at things like this", and "here are some things you might choose to try".
Instead of looking at this bit of self-improvement as a chore, it phrased it all as a choice - "this might help". And I found myself looking forward to trying the things the author suggested, and learning about my "gremlin". I was a bit surprised how quickly I identified several of my gremlin's techniques, and I've started learning to "hear him without heeding him".
I'm not going to say "I'm now two inches taller, twenty pounds lighter, and I'm a much better dancer" - it's not that type of book, and it didn't promise that sort of results. This book helps you ask and answer the hard questions about what you really want from your work and life and will help you successfully pursue your career goals.

Organizational psychologist and executive coach Rebecca Newton has found that even her most successful clients still want more of one quality: gravitas. They want their words to carry weight, to have a positive, lasting impact on those around them.
Gravitas can seem like an elusive, intangible quality, but it isn't about adopting the style of another or being someone you're not. Newton draws on extensive research and experience coaching business leaders to show what underpins authentic gravitas and how anyone can develop it.
She presents the counterintuitive idea that in order to be valued, we shouldn't spend all our time and energy trying to stand out from the crowd; instead, we should focus on the crowd--connecting with others and understanding their needs in order to make a significant difference.
